Intersections in Selwyn among the most dangerous

The intersections of Main South Rd/Aylesbury Rd, Main South Rd/ Dawsons Rd, Shands Rd/Blakes Rd, and Jones Rd/Curraghs Rd have been named in the New Zealand Transport Agency’s top 100 list. One of the most dangerous intersections, Shands/Blakes Rd is ranked as no 10 in the list, having one fatal crash, two serious crashes and two minor crashes. The list, released by the NZTA last week, uses data from crashes between 2006 and last year. Main South Rd/Dawsons Rd ranked as number 38 on the list and had three serious crashes and seven minor

crashes. Main South Rd/ Aylesbury Rd had one serious crash and nine minor crashes. Jones Rd/Curraghs Rd had one serious crash and six minor crashes. NZTA principal project manager Geoff Griffiths said the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 project severs Blakes Rd and turns it into a cul-de-sac. “This should reduce the cross traffic at the Blakes Rd/Shands Rd intersection,” he said. The Main South Rd/ Dawsons Rd intersection is also to be converted into a roundabout as part of the project. NZTA plans to open stage two of the Southern Motorway in early 2020. But Senior Sergeant Pete Stills said police cannot sit still and not worry until then. •Turn to page 7

Donald kicked a last-minute penalty to win the match and sink the hopes of a gallant Darfield on Saturday. Reminds me of another Donald – Stephen, who landed a fairly important World Cup goal. It was a great day of finals football at Prebbleton. Hopefully, the teams had Mad Mondays they may or may not remember, if Mad Mondays are still allowed. – Barry Clarke

Residents aim to solve water concerns at public meeting

A public meeting with Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Alistair Humphrey and Fish and Game environmental adviser Scott Pearson on water issues will be held on Thursday. Fifth-generation dairy farmer Alison Dewes, who is also an ecologist and veterinarian, Farmers for Positive Change leader Rick Burke and Freshwater ecologist Russell Death will also travel from the North Island to speak. It comes after new group Selwyn Waihora Water Improvement Mission was formed last month in a bid to find a solution to water issues in the district. Residents and farmers from around the district have collaborated together to focus on health issues in drinking water and the level of nitrate in wells. Concerns have been raised over the Central Plains Water scheme leading to the intensification of agriculture and a higher nitrogen load going into Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora. In a joint decision by independent commissioners in May 2010 on the construction and

operation of the CPW scheme, it was acknowledged infants up to six months who are being bottle-fed could be at risk from an increase in nitrate-nitrogen reaching shallow water. The report said: “The risk can be avoided by sourcing alternative small quantities of water for the critical six-month period from deep community bores . . .

CPW has offered this,”. A CPW spokeswoman confirmed it will immediately supply alternative drinking water to domestic dwellings that have infants at the time of an increase in nitrate-nitrogen levels. Mr Glover said the community is being forced to cope with stresses they shouldn’t have to and it is important people realise what potential risks there are. He said the group is not against farming but the way the land is being farmed needs to change. In May, Selwyn Times reported tensions came to a head at the Selwyn Waihora Water Zone Committee over democracy surrounding water issues and the effects of farming intensification. As a result Environment Canterbury has been running a series of seminars to attempt to reduce tensions. ship and of course we are completing research that will change the way New Zealand’s primary industries operate in the future. Lincoln University has a long legacy of providing brilliant student experiences to generations of graduates across the country. This much has not changed in Lincoln’s 140-year legacy. There is something very unique about being a Lincoln University student, which is something no other university in the country can quite duplicate. Our 12:1 student to staff ratio might have something to do with it. The staff know your name, which is all well and good until you’re being called on by name to answer a question you don’t know the answer to. Others say it’s the laid-back rural feel that creates a community feel that no matter where you’re from you’ll end up belonging to. We’re not all your typical stubbie and gumboot-wearing student. In fact, they might even be a dying breed. Staff and students here have a shared passion for the land, and all the things that happen on and to it. That’s something worth celebrating too.

Fizzy banned at school By Georgia O’Connor-Harding GLENTUNNEL School has taken charge in the battle against sugar, banning all fizzy drink from its premises. From now on, low-fat milk or water will be the only drinks to be consumed by pupils while in attendance at the school. The new policy to come into place this term has received unanimous support from parents of the school. The idea was put into action by school principal Dion Stechmann after he was inspired by Lower Hutt’s Randwick School implementing the same policy. “The key reasons are creating habits for our pupils going through life and awareness of what is good for their body and brain and awareness for their learning,” he said. Any pupil caught with a fizzy drink will be asked to put it back in their school bag. Mr Stechmann said the most important thing is giving pupils an understanding of why drinking water or milk only is a good choice. “What kids do outside of school is their choice. We are encouraging this in school and hopefully that transfers to better decisions outside of school,” he said.

So far, the feedback received by the pupils is that it has been a good idea. Both the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health are encouraging schools to adopt healthy drinking policies. According to both ministries, sugary drinks are a cause of poor oral health and contribute to childhood obesity and

The intersections are ranked based on the number of fatal crashes, and crashes which leave people injured. Lincoln students show off big brains A LINCOLN High School student has won a of an Otago University medical competition about how the brain works. Year 11 student Alan Li has been selected to travel to Sydney in December to take part in the Australian Brain Bee Challenge after winning the New Zealand equivalent. Alan took out the New Zealand Brain Bee Challenge individual question round against 88 other South Island high school students. Alan and fellow Lincoln student Maria Nieto Mendoza made it into the final seven competitors before he took the top prize. Lincoln students Annalyse Welford, Breanna Gatehouse, Ryan Gibbs, Madison McQuinlan, Hannah Newell and Janelle Kwan also competed.

But that was not the only success for the school. The school’s team won first place in the Brain Bee team challenge, making Lincoln the school champions. Alan, Maria, Madison and Annalyse formed the team and were required to answer a mix of team and individual questions. The school’s science head of learning area assistant, Anna

Milne, said the students put a lot of hard work into their study before leaving and conducted themselves in a fantastic way while away. As well as winning both categories of the competition, students listened to guest speakers, took part in electrostimulation labs, toured laboratories and visited Dunedin’s Anatomy Museum.

Manaia Davies, 12, will travel to Amsterdam in October to represent the country in the international Hip Hop Unite Championships in October. The Darfield High School student has been selected to dance for two dance studios, as well as qualifying with Nelson-based partner Mia Weir. Mia and Manaia, along with Rebel Youth Dance Crew and Zion Dance, qualified in June after competing in the Hip Hop Unite New Zealand National Championships held in Wellington. Once Manaia has finished competing in Amsterdam, she plans to travel to Germany to attend a dance camp run BOP TO THE TOP: A team of year 5 pupils at Rolleston School have danced their way into the 2017 Jump Jam Challenge National Competition. A grant of $500 has been made by the Malvern Community Board to go towards the competition. Manaia, who teaches a hip-hop dance class in Springfield three days a week and an open adult dance class at Zion Studios, in Christchurch, first began dancing at the age of three. She travels to Auckland nearly every month to train with dance crew Rebel Youth, as well as travelling to Christchurch, and Nelson, where she trains with Mia. “When you love something a lot you do everything and anything to make that happen,” she said. She said her parents have sup-

ported her dancing and she is grateful for that. Her mother Yerane Davies, said she was proud of her daughter and this experience will be great for her team-building and confidence. For Manaia, she said dance for her is like a form of language. “I think it is really important to have that and to be able to express yourself through a different form and being able to just feel it,” she said. As for living in Glentunnel, Manaia said she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love Glentunnel. Bagpipes help Rolleston man to Rolleston’s Allan McKenzie, 48, helps run the Ellesmere Highland Pipe Band and leads the Canterbury Caledonian Society band. He spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding I hear getting involved in the Ellesmere Highland Pipe Band cured you of your asthma? I started out when I was 12. I was told it was supposed to help your lung capacity. It certainly does. If I go to the doctor now I can blow the peak flow metre to about 750. I think it goes out to 800. A normal person can’t blow that far. It has definitely helped me. Do you get asthma attacks? No. I used to suffer as a kid with bronchitis and in those days we never had inhalers so you just lived with it. I did have an attack when I was about 16. But from that point on I have been great. The asthma attack I had was awful, I was driving at the time. I wasn’t sure what triggered it. I think I got wet. Who gave you the advice to go play for the pipe band? Family. I had an uncle who was good at it. My father started to learn as well – it was in the

blood. Bagpipes are an awesome option because you can take them anywhere. You can play at all sorts. I started in Oamaru, but most of my piping time was in Dunedin. I played for Maggie’s Garden Show. I played for the All Blacks at Larnach Castle. I got to meet the Royal Family when they came over. I didn’t play for them – you have got to be pretty special to do that. I met Prince Edward. What did you think of him? I was pretty nervous. It was a long time ago, but he was like a normal person. Seeing the All Blacks up close was pretty special. I played for the Government. It is amazing when you look back at all you have done. What was the highlight? I played at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow. That has probably been the pinnacle for me. That was for the Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band based in Christchurch. We had never

been out of New Zealand – pretty amazing. It was about three years ago. New Zealand has a great reputation for producing good bagpipers. Why is that? We have a good infrastructure. I am involved in a trust where we send people over to Scotland to learn. Then they come back and they teach here. Everyone has got to start somewhere. There is the Rolleston Piping and Drumming School. I help them out the best I can. I have also taken over the Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band as pipe manager based in Christchurch.

Does your family have their own tartan? There is a McKenzie tartan and I do wear that. I am very proud of that. In fact, when we went over to the world champs, we visited where the McKenzies came from. They are from the Scottish Highlands. I played the bagpipes on the hills. It was quite an eerie feeling so I got out of the car and had a tune. It was lucky we had a wee bit of family history. Applecross is where our family is from but I am Kiwi born and bred. That is another advantage of being in the pipe band – you get to travel.

breathe easy and see the world Do you enjoy a whisky? When I was in Dunedin I did a bit of work in tourism and we got sponsored by Wilsons whisky. They didn’t know my name so they called me Jock Wilson – I was always called that by the old guys. I was brought up to drink the whisky neat. Some of the old guys used to say to me if it was made to have water, it would have water in it. The Scottish call it the water of life. I was always told by the old guys, haggis and bagpipes go together and, of course, whisky too. You always toast the haggis with whisky. In fact, I played at the world record for the largest haggis at Larnach Castle some years ago. They had a world record for who could make the biggest haggis. Are you related William Wallace, the Scottish legend? There is a statue of him in Dunedin, but no, I am not related to him. But I have played by the statue of him in Dunedin a few times. The bagpipes certainly need to be played by someone who knows what they are doing. A lot of people haven’t been shown how to play properly. There is a school in the summer in Christchurch for pipers and

drummers. The resources are there – we’ve never had that before. What do you think of the music scene in Selwyn? The beauty about bagpipes for younger people is you can take the instrument anywhere and play it. Could be a birthday party or funeral. That is how versatile they are. You can entertain people anywhere. You learn about competing, how to plan and design. There is a saying we have – the will to win is worthless without the will to prepare.

The pipe band does lots of good things for you – you meet some great business people and because you entertain, you get over shyness quite quickly. Does your immediate family share an interest in playing the bagpipes? My wife is a highland dancer. We have been married 28 years. Both of our kids have been brought up with the bagpipes. In the past, Callum has played the base drum and Braedyn has played a little bit on the bagpipes. I understand you help out

at the Rolleston Piping and Drumming School? There are bagpipers all over the district. There is a hub of bagpipe players in Leeston and then there is a pod in Rolleston and there is an idea to bring them together. Rolleston has grown so much. A lot of people have put in work to get the Rolleston Piping and Drumming School going. There will be a lot of future bagpipe players coming from Rolleston. You have an interest in duck shooting? Yes, we don’t hunt for trophies,

we hunt for food. Canterbury is just awesome. We shoot deer, tahr, we fish for salmon and trout. Do you have a favourite hunting spot? I like to get up in the hills. It gives me quiet time – it is so relaxing. We go duck-shooting as well and sometimes go high up by the Rakaia – it is a pretty special place. You can be sitting up on the Rakaia River and you can look up at the hills and you can see the lights of Mt Hutt. The most special part is going out with my kids. Where did you grow up and how did you end up in Selwyn? I work for a great company called Foodstuffs. I moved from Invercargill. I have been all over the South Island actually, but we have assembled here. I lived around Dunedin, Timaru, Oamaru, Invercargill and, in all those areas I have lived in, I have been involved with the local pipe bands. Pipes are a polarising instrument. What do you think? The neighbours don’t tend to complain. They are a stirring instrument there is no doubt about that. But I have never been told to stop. I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t enjoy it.

Donald kicks Southbridge By Gordon Findlater SHANNON Donald was the hero in Southbridge’s 16-15 win over Darfield to claim the Coleman Shield at Prebbleton on Saturday. Trailing 13-15 with time ticking down, Southbridge were awarded a penalty giving Donald a chance to give his side the lead with a difficult mid-range kick from the angle in windy conditions. “I thought if I get it, I’m going to be a hero and if I didn’t, we were going to lose. It was one of those things were you have to take a crack and it paid off,” said Donald. With the clock at the ground having clicked over the 80min mark during the successful kick, supporters rushed onto the pitch to celebrate. However, the celebrations were short lived with the

Dunsandel regains its heart Dunsandel residents turned out in droves to celebrate the opening of the brand new Dunsandel Community Centre, which was officially opened on Friday evening. The building replaces the original Dunsandel Community Hall, located in the township, which was demolished in 2012 after being damaged beyond repair in the 2010-2011 earthquakes. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton says the $3.9 million Community Centre will be a fantastic asset to the Dunsandel area. “A project like this doesn’t happen overnight and it doesn’t happen by accident,” he says. “It takes a lot of planning and contributions from a number of people. “This beautiful building is a testament to the dedication of the community, with a total of $350,000 raised in donations, as well as generous contributions from Rata Foundation and The New Zealand Lottery Grants Board.” The Hon Amy Adams MP performed the ribbon cutting, while speakers included Mayor Broughton, Dunsandel Community Committee chair Russell Dalzell, and committee member and former Selwyn District Council Councillor Nigel Barnett.

Ella McClure, Chair of the Selwyn District Youth Council, says the discretionary fund is one of the first of its kind in New Zealand local government. “The allocation and administration of the funds is completely at the discretion of the Youth Council, for the benefit of our peers in the district,” she says. The Youth Council will assess the applications and distribute the funds as they see appropriate at their monthly meeting. Selwyn Youth Council meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month (except January). Applications must be submitted by the 20th of the previous month.

Water meters installed in Lincoln The Council is installing water meters on properties in Lincoln that haven’t previously had meters. The project is part of the district-wide rollout of water meters for all households on Council water supplies. Most newer Lincoln properties are already on the water metering system. Water meters have been shown to reduce water consumption as they link water use to charging – so households that use less water benefit from lower charges, while those using more pay higher charges. For properties where meters have been installed, there will be some changes to the way water is charged.

Construction of a right turn bay is continuing at the intersection of Dynes Road and Springston Rolleston Road, with traffic controls in place at this location. Care is needed when driving through the site.

The pop-up irrigation system installation on the back fields of the domain will begin in mid-August. The fields will be fenced off for six weeks for the installation and to allow grass to grow back. We hope to have these fields ready for the start of the cricket season in early October.

Spin is a fun, low impact workout where you control the resistance dial and intensity, meaning it’s suitable for all fitness levels. Working with great inspirational music and an instructor you will follow a journey of flat roads, hill climbs, sprints and attacks. At the end of the class there is a recovery ride and a chance to welcome your endorphin high.

Pothole patching is occurring on Stranges Road, Courtenay Road, and Burns Road. Flooding repairs are occurring on Curries Road. Timber rail repairs are occurring on Gullivers Road. Traffic controls will be operating at all sites.

Linda Miratana, Lincoln Event Centre instructor, says the classes are fun and effective. “I have witnessed so many people get lean and fit from this workout” she says. “Twice a week creates results, watching this makes my job so rewarding.”

Culvert cleaning is occurring on Craigieburn Road. Water table cleaning will occur on Snowdon Road. Drainage upgrades are being carried out on Brookside Road and Burnham Road. Traffic controls will be operating at these sites.

This has made the irrigation of these fields much more efficient by being able to water the areas that need it the most, and we have been able to conserve water by watering through the night when there is less evaporation. While the Lincoln Domain is fortunate to have its own water supply we are conscious of using this precious commodity wisely. This irrigation also reduces the costs of staff time involved with operating the system as there will no longer need to be a manually operated system.

Young Stallions to have a gallop By Gordon Findlater SELWYN UNITED have the luxury of giving some of their wider squad a run in their final two rounds in the Canterbury Championship League after sealing the title last week. THe club gained promotion to the Mainland Premier League for the first time in its history last week and are already preparing for life in Canterbury’s elite competition. “We know it’s a big step up and we probably need to bring in a couple of experienced heads because we are very young,” said Selwyn coach Lee Padmore. “We won’t be going up just to make the numbers up, it’s not the way we operate. We’re really looking forward to see what we can do and to see if we can trouble some of the top sides,” said Padmore. THe Stallions host Waimak at Foster Park on Saturday and finish their campaign with an away trip to Burwood. “It will be nice to give some of the really young boys a go and to see how they go in the first team,” said Padmore. They currently sit in 10th place, and face an even tougher task if they are to finish the season on a high when they host defending UC Championship title holders Christchurch Boys’ High School on Saturday. Both Lincoln and Marlborough struggled to find their feet in blustery conditions at Lincoln on Saturday. The home side scored the only points of the first half, with lock Bailey Clark crossing the line. Marlborough started the second half the stronger of the two sides and were rewarded with a penalty and converted try to take the lead 10-5. Lincoln’s No 8 Robin Enosi levelled the score midway through the second half when he crossed the line on the back of a rolling maul. The try was scored close to the side line, leaving Brett Gillan with a challenging angle. The centre rose to the occasion, though, giving Lincoln a 12-10 advantage which they would hold until the final whistle. Saturday’s final match against CBHS kicks off at Lincoln High School at noon.

Backyard Critters Huhu beetle hard to mistake Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us THE ENDEMIC huhu (Prionoplus reticularis) is New Zealand’s largest (up to 50mm) beetle. Their nugget-brown appearance, with paler wing-vein markings and long, thick antennae make this beetle hard to mistake. The adult is most commonly seen around outdoor lights on summer nights where their clumsy erratic flight and noisy buzz is very distinctive. The adults only live for about two weeks and do not eat, but can inflict a bite. Females lay clusters of cigar-shaped eggs under bark or in crevices of dead wood including pine, kahikatea, kauri

Eggs hatch after about three weeks and larvae burrow into the wood, excavating tunnels and leaving a trail of coarse frass (insect poo) behind them. Huhu larvae grow to a maximum of 75mm long, taking two to three years to pupate. Huhu larvae are eaten by Maori and used as fishing bait. Larvae are also eaten by native birds such as weka and kiwi, while morepork prey on the adults.

Gardening Plant colourful kowhai in your native garden By Veronica Armstrong THE HERALD of spring in the native garden has to be the sunshine yellow kowhai (Sophora species) – even its name means yellow. Its lovely flowers have led to kowhai being considered our national flower. Admittedly, this tree or large shrub can look quite drab for most of the year, but at springtime it comes into its own by bursting into beautiful yellow flowers. I have a smaller-growing cultivar, Sophora molloyi ‘Dragon’s Gold’, which is more shrub-like in size and this flowers in late winter. This year it started flowering as early as June, perhaps due to our milder autumn. Kowhai are significant to Maori and the flowering on bare branches, before the leaves appear, was a signal that winter was over, frosts were past and it was time to plant the kumara. After flowering the seeds form in pods that hang down from the branches. The seeds usually need scarification (abrasive rubbing to allow water into the seeds) before germinating. This can happen when seeds pass through the gut
